okay so to the folks of ferguson:
building a diy first aid kit if you don’t already own one:
- teatowels and towels make decent slings in an emergency despite being rectangular. cloths, neckers, anything that’s square can be used to support a broken arm
- shirts, scarves, any piece of cloth can be used as a bandage. tie tight enough that it stays on, but not tight enough that there is a loss of sensation below the bandage. add another layer of bandage when it the blood has stained most of the bandage
- babywipes or any alcohol free wipes are a blessing — great for cleaning wounds and cleaning your hands before addressing a wound if possible
- clingfilm for burn wounds
- a blanket if possible
- band aids are an obvious choice — any works
- gloves to protect yourself from infection if possible — be wary of latex gloves, for one may have a reaction to them
- for an improvised stretcher: find two sturdy poles that are around 8ft in length. find a large blanket or tarp that can hold weight and wrap it around the two poles.
how to address injuries:
- for a broken arm, it is likely that they have found themselves a comfortable position for their arm. work your away around that position and make a sling
- for a bleeding wound, clean and bandage. if not possible bc it’s bleeding a fuckton, apply bandages and apply pressure instantly. raise the wound above the head (if it’s on the leg, lay them down and raise their leg, on the arm, raise the arm above the head, etc)
- do NOT remove any shrapnel/whatever that is in the wound in most cases — they are more than likely blocking the blood from exiting your body
- for a burn (dry heat) and a scald (wet heat) run under cold water until the coldness of the water hurts more than the burn. if not possible, wrap clingfilm around the burn to protect it
- how to put someone in a recovery position (i know it links to an epileptic society site, but it’s the same position)
- how to carry an injured person by yourself
- if a person is in shock — be calm, shock can be a killer. remove them from the situation is possible, get them sat down, get a blanket around them and talk to them calmly. assure them it’s going to be okay, make them take calming, slow breaths until they are calm again
a general rule to addressing the injured:
- be calm, be cool
- address them directly, be honest
- always talk to them, even if they’re unconscious — the last thing to go is someone’s hearing if they’re not already deaf. what to talk about? anything. you could talk about your grandma’s cousin’s girlfriend’s cat who keeps getting stuck up trees. anything works
- if possible, due to the situation, remove them as far away as you can from the police.
found a person that’s unconscious?
- ask everyone around if they know this person. if someone does, good, they’ll be a lot of help
- check for dangers — cops, anything that can harm you
- approach them, calling out their name or whatever for attention “Hello! Can you hear me?” “Hey! [Name]! Can you hear me? Say so!”
- if there’s still no response, get on your knees and ask them again in both ears — there is a chance that they may be deaf
- check their pulse
- check their breathing by putting your ear to their mouth and looking down their body to look at their chest. if they are not breathing (confirmed by not feeling their breath on your face, or seeing their chest rise and fall), call for help before you start cpr. if you start, you cannot stop until you are physically unable to carry on or somebody else has taken over
- how to do cpr: 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths to the beat of nelly the elephant/staying alive for an adult. it doesn’t matter what goes first as long as you’re doing it.
- if they’re breathing? good. start the top to toe procedure to check for wounds
- address wounds if they have any
- then put them in the recovery position and get somebody to get help from a medical professional if possible. if they are in danger, address the wounds and remove them from the situation
if possible, start a 2 person team system so if a person is hurt, they always have someone to back them up and help them
stay safe
